Music connects with us on different wavelengths of time. Sometimes those wavelengths stretch across eras, washing over entire generations. The British Invasion. The late 70s punk explosion. The alt-rock surge of the 90s.
Other times the wavelength contracts, like when the atmosphere of a single album perfectly captures an hour of your life, or a single song strikes with a three to four minute bolt of energy.
And then there are the moments. The micro-bursts so small they barely take up time at all. They don't live across minutes, but inside seconds. The cymbal crash at the 0:24 mark of "Plainsong." The vocal pivot into the outro at the 2:35 mark of "Karma Police." The frenetic collapse at the end of "Porch."
This year, another such moment arrives at the 1:33 mark of "Taxes" by Geese. In a flat and lackluster year of music, this exhilarating hook cut through the gray and drenched us in brightest musical burst of 2025.
