In 2017, Hope and I took Romy to her first concert — Fitz and the Tantrums opening for OneRepublic at Jones Beach. I was mainly there to see Fitz and the Tantrums, and no, Romy wasn't a big fan. I don't think she even knew who they were. But I really wanted her to enjoy the experience. So, without mentioning it, I played nothing but Fitz and the Tantrums whenever she was in the car with me for weeks leading up to the concert, hoping it would sink in.
On the way there, I told her I had "programmed" her to enjoy the concert. While that might have sounded a bit creepy, sure enough, she knew every song that night. And as a bonus, she also knew tons of OneRepublic songs — something I hadn't even thought about.
I've always made a point of preparing for concerts, and the rise of crowd-sourced setlist aggregators like setlist.fm has made this easier than ever. In the week leading up to a show, I can usually get a good handle on most of the songs. It's made jumping into concerts much easier and has led to me seeing a lot more shows in recent years.
